Omega 3 Fatty Acids: Is It True?

You hear all this talk about Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 is great for your hair. It’s great for your skin. That’s all you hear, but what is Omega 3? Omega 3 is an acid called Alpha Linolenic (ALA), which is the primary fatty acid. ALA converts itself into two other fatty acids - Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Dorosahexaenoic acid (DHA). You need these three primary fatty acids, ALA, EPA, and DHA. The only problem is that your body's system doesn’t convert ALA into DHA and EPA very well, so you must import them.

You can buy supplements or eat certain foods to obtain the primary fatty acids. To get the best benefits and the most percent of fatty acids, you need to eat fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, or tuna. If you’re not into fish, there are non-flesh foods you can eat that are high in Omega 3 like acai, purslne, flaxseed, and kelp oil. Any products that are plant-based, super foods are a great source of Omega 3. Omega 3 fights dry and brittle hair. It also has properties that fight hair loss and can even restart hair growth.

If you aren’t dealing with hair loss, you will still benefit from adding Omega 3 to your diet. Over time it, will add luster, sheen, and elasticity to your strands. However, how does it do all of this? Omega 3 acts as cement. It takes the shape of the substance that seals the scales of the hair cuticle and enables the hair to protect itself against external aggressiveness. It then acts as a barrier, sealing water that was absorbed by the hair. It also acts like a sponge, a mild humectant that absorbs small amounts of water from the air's humidity to help keep the hair hydrated throughout the day. So, yes the right Omega 3 fatty acids are great for your hair and scalp, and are definitely a must have for those dealing with hair loss.
